Giles Helps Pace Concordia to Victory in Tournament

Sophomore Josh Giles scored 25 points as Concordia defeated Husson College of Maine, 84-72, to reach the final of the Concordia Holiday men’s basketball tournament.
The Eagles (9-7) will meet Caldwell (N.J.), a 55-54 winner over Columbia (Mo.), in the final at 7 tonight.
Kalim Scott scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds for Concordia. Jet Quillen had 11 points.
Tony Tobin scored 21 points for Husson (12-6).
In the La Jolla men’s basketball tournament:
Robert Morris 84, Southern California College 78--Kevin Jones was six of seven from three-point range in a semifinal victory for Robert Morris (9-8). Craig Jones had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Robert Morris, an NCAA Division I team from Pennsylvania.
Adam Dzierzynski made eight three-pointers and had 34 points for SCC (9-7). Justin McIntee scored 21 points for the Vanguards.
In the Redlands women’s basketball Tournament:
UC Santa Cruz 57, Pacific Christian 48--Amy Gunn scored 25 points and had eight rebounds for Santa Cruz (3-8). Emily Tryon had eight rebounds for UC Santa Cruz.
The Banana Slugs play Redlands in the final at 8 tonight.
Andrienne Penn scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds for Pacific Christian (5-9).
Pacific Christian plays Caltech in the third-place game at 6 p.m.
In the Big West Conference:
Cal State Fullerton 71, New Mexico State 53--Kris Sigg scored 18 points as the Titans won their conference opener. Andrea Thieme scored 17 points and Nashira Shaw had eight points and had 11 rebounds for Fullerton (4-8, 1-0).
Wendy Ray scored 20 points for New Mexico State (5-9, 0-2).
UC Irvine 69, North Texas 60--Megan Stafford scored 21 points and Leticia Oseguera had 20 points and 13 rebounds for UC Irvine (6-6, 1-0). Ashley Norris scored 18 points for North Texas (6-7, 0-1).
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Concordia 80, The Master’s 78--Jamie Gast and Kristin Weddick each scored 17 points for Concordia (12-4), which outscored The Master’s, 43-37, in the second half. Also scoring in double figures were Heather Carll (12 points), Sarah Mavety (11 points) and Allison Fortner (10 points).
In women’s swimming:
Lomboy places second in two events--UC Irvine’s Melody Lomboy placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1 minute 10.06 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:33.32) in a three-way meet between Pepperdine, San Jose State and UCI. The Anteaters finished ahead of San Jose State, 172-126, but lost to Pepperdine, 177-121.
