Fourth-grader Andrew Lawson says he can’t wait to crack open the new books he received for Christmas.
Since enrolling in Capistrano Unified School District’s new one-on-one Reading Village program last fall, Andrew now plows through books such as the “Phantom of the Opera.” His social studies grades are improving and he gets excited about reading, adds his mother, Cindy Lawson.
“He has developed a love for reading,” said Lawson, of San Juan Capistrano. “He says, ‘Mom, I think I will go and sit down and read to myself for a while.’ ”
Capistrano officials will hold an open house Saturday at a new storefront space in Suite 380 at the Mission Viejo Mall, 150 Crown Valley Parkway. There are four school sites where children also can get an extra boost with their reading.
“Now that I can read better, there are more interesting books I can sit down and read,” said Andrew, 9, who attends Harold Ambuehl Elementary.
