The most intriguing of several league openers Friday night is Villa Park at fourth-ranked Canyon in a Century League game at 7:30. It will be the first time back at Canyon for Villa Park guard Justin Haney, who left the school after being removed from Canyon’s team three games into the season for what Coach Rob Alexander termed “violations of team rules.” Haney enrolled at Villa Park in late December and on Wednesday was granted a hardship transfer waiver--at Canyon’s urging--by the Southern Section. Although he was unable to practice with the Spartans until the waiver came through, Haney might start against his former teammates. “We don’t have a point guard and he is good,” Villa Park Coach Kevin Reynolds said. Haney scored 11 points in Wednesday’s loss to Woodbridge.
