$1.2 Million OKd for Police Helicopter

The City Council on Monday approved spending $1.2 million to add a new helicopter to the Police Department.
The Boeing Notar helicopter would be available by spring or summer and would replace a 1978 helicopter that is becoming expensive to repair.
The Police Department plans to sell the older aircraft for about $250,000, leaving the department with a fleet of three.
The new helicopter will be purchased with money from a vehicle abatement grant and savings in maintenance to the older aircraft.
The department chose the Notar because it is the quietest made and has no tail rotor, a feature that decreases the chance of accidents.
Police use the helicopters for patrols and narcotic surveillance, as well as other operations.
