2 Grants Awarded to Help Blighted Neighborhoods

Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday awarded two Housing and Urban Development grants totaling $3.9 million to improve blighted neighborhoods.
A grant for $1.9 million will help 203 families buy homes in a low-income area bounded by 7th Street on the south, Willow Street on the north, Locust Avenue on the west and Lime Avenue on the east. This area was hit hard by the 1992 riots, and the commercial zone on Long Beach Boulevard suffered.
The grant is expected to increase home ownership from 12% to 20%.
A second grant for $2 million will be used to remove lead-based paint in more than 200 housing units built before 1978 in downtown Long Beach.
