A barge smashed into an offshore oil platform in stormy weather in the Gulf of Mexico, starting fires on both and injuring eight workers, the Coast Guard said. The blaze was quickly extinguished on the barge, but fire continued to burn on the platform for another four hours. The injured workers were ferried to hospitals in Louisiana. The barge, being pushed by a tug, hit the platform about 1:45 p.m., 15 miles south of the mouth of the Mississippi River off Southwest Pass.
