What: “Goin’ Deep,” Fox Sports West

When: Sundays, 9 p.m.

ESPN has its outstanding “Outside the Lines” series and HBO has its award-winning “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.” Now Fox Sports Net, which includes Fox Sports West, has a new sports magazine show.

“Goin’ Deep,” with Joe Buck as host, is a weekly show, while “Outside the Lines” runs periodically and “Real Sports” is on only six times a year, although things are in the works to possibly make it a monthly show.

Fox Sports Net executives believe putting “Goin’ Deep” on weekly gives them an edge.

“Sports fans have been looking for a show that week in and week out provides more than scores and highlights,” said Arthur Smith, Fox Sports Net executive vice president and co-executive producer of “Goin’ Deep.”

Said senior vice president and co-executive producer John Terenzio: “It’s our ’60 Minutes.’ Being on once a week means we can be more topical.”

Well, maybe not always very topical. A recent “Goin’ Deep” segment focused on concussions in sports, a topic that has been dealt with extensively in both broadcast and print media. But the “Goin’ Deep” segment, reported by Michael Kay, was as good, if not better, than any other broadcast pieces on the topic.

The 60-minute show has a number of segments and moves well. Smith and Terenzio say they are seeking a good mix. The show might be able to do without the segment that has Jim Rome and Wally Matthews yelling over each other--they do enough of that on their own show, “The Last Word.”
