Birdielee V. Bright Elementary school was among nine in the Western United States selected to receive a $5,000 grant to create a school garden, officials said Wednesday.
The grant awarded to the school was provided by the Urban Garden Scholarship Project, a partnership between the New Organics Co. and Mothers & Others for a Livable Planet, two environmental groups.
Mothers & Others will supervise the project designed to stimulate children’s interest in the natural world and to increase their understanding of nutrition and sustainable ecosystems, a spokesman said.
Mothers & Others was founded in 1989 by actress Meryl Streep and Wendy Gordon, a former staff member of the National Resources Defense Council. New Organics produces organic food sold in supermarkets.
