COSTA MESA — Apparel designer Quiksilver Inc. will open five more company-owned stores this year, including one in New York’s Soho district and one at Fashion Island Newport Beach.
The three other stores will be in South Miami Beach and two in Paris, including one on the Champs Elysees.
The Costa Mesa surf-wear company signed a 20-year lease for an 1,800-square-foot store on Spring Street in Soho, Chairman Bob McKnight said Thursday. It will open in June after a $500,000 renovation. Three other Orange County apparel firms, Wet Seal, Pacific Sunwear and Gotcha Sportswear, have opened New York stores in recent months.
Quiksilver is negotiating with Fashion Island to open a store devoted to its Roxy juniors line, McKnight said. The only other Roxy store is in Honolulu and is not owned by the company.
There are 39 Quiksilver stores in the United States and Europe, but the company owns only the stores in London, Maui and Park City, Utah. McKnight said that the company eventually would like to own 20% of the stores and probably would achieve that by opening new ones.
