Traveler’s Notes . . .
Visitors to Lake Tahoe on Saturday can watch paddle-wheelers Tahoe Queen and the M.S. Dixie II race for the first time in nine years. The Great Lake Tahoe Stern-Wheeler Race starts at 11 a.m. in South Lake Tahoe near the state line. Dixie led 4-2 when the race was last held in 1989. Information: (530) 544-5050. . . . Average gasoline prices are at their pre-Labor Day lowest in nine years--$1.031 per gallon, down 19.4 cents from last year in the Southwest, the AAA reported last week. . . . As of last week, frequent fliers on American Airlines and US Airways could begin pooling miles from both airlines to claim mileage awards on either one. . . . A record of sorts was set this month when a Greek taxi driver was arrested for allegedly charging Australian tourist Kelly Jane Smith, 23, $127 for a short ride from the Athens airport to the city center--about 25 times the standard fare. “Overcharging tourists . . . is a common problem, but it’s the first time anyone has dared to ask for so much more,” a police official said.
