Masquerade
Where it doesn’t have to be Halloween for dressing up . . .
Arena. On Saturday nights, this former ice factory and now modern disco is packed with gay Latin men who adopt various looks, from preppy school boy to proud cowboy, all gyrating in style to Spanish disco music. 6655 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 462-0714. 18 and over, $10 cover.
Cafe Bleu at Tempest. On Thursdays, when Cafe Bleu takes over this modest restaurant, stylish mods from all over light down and boogie to the finest Brit Pop in town. The only thing better than the music is watching how Quadrophenia-era fashion has made a stellar comeback. 7323 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 951-7079. 18 and over, $6-$8 cover.
The Derby. This classy swing club set a new standard for the look of post-modern guys and dolls, who returned to the ‘40s for fashion tips and by the looks of things here, truly wear it well. 4500 Los Feliz Blvd., Los Feliz, (323) 663-8979. 21 and over, cover varies.
Dragstrip 66 at Rudolpho’s. Paul V and Mr. Dan are the hosts with the most on the second Saturday of every month, when this long-lasting drag club lands its alien spaceship and parties like it’s 1999. No better place to be, actually, when 1999 comes along, because Paul will undoubtedly rock the house with his always cool mix of punk, pop and weird stuff. 2500 Riverside Drive, Silver Lake, (323) 969-2596. 21 and over, call for cover.
Four of Clubs at the Hollywood Athletic Club. It’s always show time at this monthly joint venture of the backers of Sin-a-Matic (techno fetish), Coven 13 (Gothic), Cafe Bleu and Shout! (Brit Pop, Northern Soul). (The next one is Friday.) L.A.’s stylish kids get gussied up in homage to their musical heroes and turn it up real loud. Our faves are the Goths, who stop at nothing to make their personal statements, whether it’s tragedy or comedy, or both. 6525 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 962-6600.
Odyssey at Lingerie. Finally, the garish ‘80s-style disco that Lingerie became a few years back actually makes sense. Odyssey, a Saturday night dance party, is a throwback to the ‘80s, with nothing but music from the Reagan era. Look out, you’ll all be wearing Topsiders soon! 6507 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, (323) 466-8557. 21 and over, $10 cover.
Sin-a-Matic at 7969. What would the guests who turn up weekly on Saturday nights at this 8-year-old techno club be wearing if it wasn’t for fetish gear? Absolutely nothing. 7969 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, (323) 654-0280. 21 and over, $10 cover.
