Titans’ Pitching Coach Will Stay

Cal State Fullerton pitching coach Dave Serrano said Tuesday he has rejected a similar position at Tennessee and will remain an assistant to Coach George Horton.

Serrano said he had agreed to terms to return to Tennessee on Rod Delmonico’s staff, but then decided against it. Serrano was an assistant at Tennessee in 1995-96 before joining the Titan staff.

“It became an issue of loyalty to Coach Horton and our players, as well as my strong feelings about the future of the program,” Serrano said.

Trevor Ickes was named the girls’ soccer coach at Esperanza High, replacing Phyllis Scarborough who retired, girls’ Athletic Director Dianne Genduso said.

Ickes, the son of Mater Dei baseball Coach Bob Ickes, was a two-time All-Southern Section forward at Mater Dei. Ickes, 24, also played soccer at Loyola Marymount and spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the Mater Dei girls’ soccer team.
