Old Pro Was Young at Heart

Jim Murray had known my son since he was a young kid. When my son was 17, he was covering a tennis tournament for another newspaper.
Murray bumped into him, took him out to lunch and spent 30 minutes talking to my son about career goals.
Not a word about himself, which was typical Murray.
I later thanked him profusely.
“You don’t know what a thrill it is to a 17-year-old to have Jim Murray pay all that attention to him,” I said.
“From where I’m sitting in life,” Murray replied, “the big thrill would be to be 17.”
