Philadelphia defensive end Mike Mamula underwent reconstructive surgery on his right knee Saturday after being injured in the Eagles’ exhibition game against Pittsburgh on Friday night, and Arthur Bartolozzi, the team orthopedist, said he will need six to nine months to heal.

“It’s devastating, no question about it,” Eagle Cach Ray Rhodes said. “We were hoping for him to have a big season this year.”

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with 11-year offensive lineman and long-snapper Ralph Tamm. . . . Miami’s top draft pick, running back John Avery, returned to practice after missing both Dolphin exhibitions because of a strained right hamstring. . . . Contract talks between the Chicago Bears and first-round pick Curtis Enis have broken off, and Enis, who had left Penn State after his junior season to play in the NFL, said he will sit out the season and try his luck at the draft next spring. The Bears had given Enis until today to accept either a five- or six-year deal. After the deadline, the money shrinks and the contract becomes one of three years.
