* The Writers Guild of America reached an agreement with 20th Century Fox that gives prime-time animation writers parity with their live-action counterparts. Affected are such shows as “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill,” as well as the upcoming “Futurama” and “Family Guy.” Guild leaders called the agreement a landmark pact because for the first time it establishes collective bargaining recognition for animation writers in prime time.

* United Parcel Service of America Inc. said its second-quarter net income rose 35% to $458 million as it offset higher labor costs by reducing fuel expenses and improving cost controls. The world’s largest package-delivery company said revenue rose 4.4% to $6.11 billion.
