Pitcher Manuel Barrios has returned to the Marlins. The right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on Monday and optioned to the Marlins’ triple-A team. Barrios, 23, pitched in only one game for the Dodgers, and was 1-3 with a 6.00 earned-run average in 20 games for triple-A Albuquerque.

Barrios was among five players the Marlins sent to the Dodgers in the seven-player Mike Piazza trade May 15. He was designated for assignment July 31 to make room on the 40-man roster after the Dodgers acquired left-hander Carlos Perez and shortstop Mark Grudzielanek in a seven-player deal.

In two stints with the Marlins in the majors this season, Barrios had a 3.38 ERA without a decision. He was 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in 12 games for Florida’s triple-A team.

“We like him, and we don’t have a lot of pitchers on our [40-man] roster right now who are close to the majors,” Marlin General Manager Dave Dombrowski told the Palm Beach Post.

“He hasn’t had a good year, but he’s been up and down [from triple A to the majors with Florida], then he gets traded, then he was up and down over there [with the Dodgers], and he was never able to get in a comfort zone. So even though he hasn’t had a really fine season, we still like him and we’re happy to have him back.”
