NTSB Urges Checks of Jet Fuel Pumps

The National Transportation Safety Board is calling for mandatory inspections of a fuel-pump control shaft on about one-third of all commercial jet aircraft engines. Several incidents, including one in which a Saudi Arabian Boeing 737 was destroyed on takeoff, prompted the letter from board Chairman James E. Hall to Federal Aviation Administrator Jane Garvey. The engine involved is the Pratt & Whitney JT8D. Pratt & Whitney spokesman Mark Sullivan said the company has issued service bulletins recommending inspections.
