Manning and Leaf Make Their Debuts

Peyton Manning, the first pick in this year’s NFL draft, met with limited success in his Colt debut as Indianapolis lost, 24-21, to the Seattle Seahawks in an exhibition game Saturday night at Seattle. Manning completed eight of 15 passes for 113 yards.
There weren’t any apparent opening-night jitters for Ryan Leaf, who led two scoring drives--capping one with a three-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Still--as the San Diego Chargers beat San Francisco, 27-21, at San Diego.
In other games, Jeff George’s pinpoint passing helped Oakland defeat Dallas, 16-3, at Irving, Texas. . . . Kansas City’s Chris Ortiz recovered a Tampa Bay fumble in the end zone with 44 seconds left to give the Chiefs a 17-13 victory at Norman, Okla. . . . Phillippi Sparks forced two turnovers as the New York Giants defeated Cincinnati, 24-17, at East Rutherford, N.J. . . . Olinde Mare made four field goals during a 19-16 victory by Miami over Washington at Landover, Md. . . . Kerry Collins passed for 162 yards in a 30-27 victory by Carolina over Jacksonville at Charlotte, N.C. . . . Backup quarterback Bubby Brister produced 13 first-half points as Denver beat St. Louis, 20-13, at St. Louis. . . . Travis Jervey rushed for two touchdowns in Green Bay’s 31-7 victory over New Orleans at Green Bay, Wis. . . . Jim Harbaugh directed two scoring drives in his Baltimore debut during a 19-14 victory over Chicago at Baltimore. . . . Jahine Arnold’s two long kickoff returns helped Pittsburgh beat Buffalo, 24-13, at Pittsburgh.
