Channel Islands High Principal

I was angered and outraged by the Aug. 1 article “Latino Group Seeks Ouster of Principal,” in which Latino community leaders called for the ouster of Jim Nielsen as the principal of Channel Islands High School.
As an administrator, I have worked with Mr. Nielsen in the Oxnard Union High School District for six years, one year under his direct supervision. Contrary to the allegations and innuendoes in this article, Mr. Nielsen has always demonstrated the highest degree of knowledge, expertise and concern for the educational interests of all students.
In dealing with personnel, students and parents, Mr. Nielsen always maintains a professional and respectful demeanor and approach. The fact that Mr. Nielsen has received district recognition for his service as an administrator attests to his outstanding performance and character.
I wholeheartedly support Mr. Nielsen as an outstanding principal whose career as an educator has been characterized by fairness, compassion and advocacy for all students.
Further, it has been my personal experience and observation that Mr. Nielsen is a well-respected individual among students, parents and his colleagues. Channel Islands High School is fortunate to have Mr. Nielsen as its principal.

I have known Jim Nielsen for five years and worked for him for four years. Never during that time have I seen any demonstration of racial discrimination.
Although Mr. Nielsen was a strict disciplinarian, he was fair and equitable to all students.
