Peterson Dealt Another Full House at Canyons

Gary Peterson, coach at College of the Canyons, appears to have his hands--and his clubhouse--full for next golf season.

Alex Kuyumjian, Carlos Robledo and Kyle Brandt are the only three players who are expected to return from Canyons’ Western State Conference championship team of last year, but there are 34 students enrolled in school who are hoping to make the six-man team.

Among those enrolled at Canyons are former Hart High players Geoff Voelker and Adrian Tan; Alemany graduates Anthony Harju and Robbie Clemente; John Gonzales from L.A. Baptist, Marco Evans and Patrick Stewart from Chatsworth; and Justin Dahl from Notre Dame.

Players from Canada, England and Argentina also will try out.

“There’s a chance I’ll have more guys than our football team,” Peterson said. “We can field three teams that would be competitive in our conference.”

Roy Moon of Simi Valley has qualified to play in the Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic Monday through Aug. 14 at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.

Moon, who set a Royal High record for season scoring average as a sophomore last year, survived local and state qualifying to make it into the 135-player final.

The field is headed by James Oh of Lakewood, U.S. Junior Amateur champion, and John Lepak of La Habra Heights, Rolex Tournament of Champions winner.

Ina Kim of Los Angeles, a sophomore at Harvard-Westlake, won her first two matches at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship on Thursday at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.

Kim cruised to an 8 and 6 victory over Shayana Miyajima of Wailuku, Hawaii, in her morning match, then defeated Kate Waggoner of Littleton, Colo., 2 and 1.

Julie Park of Granada Hills advanced to the third round today with a 5 and 4 victory over Shannon Barr of China Spring, Texas, in the first round and a 2-up decision over Wendra Liang of San Francisco in her second match.

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley, ranked No. 2 in the nation, eliminated Anne Lee of Northridge, 1 up.

J.T. Kohut of Simi Valley fired a five-under-par 67 in the third round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys’ Junior Championship at the Dallas Athletic Club in Mesquite, Texas, and climbed into a tie for 30th.

Kohut, who has a three-day total of 215, is 10 strokes behind leaders John Merrick of Long Beach and Patrick Norris of Orlando, Fla.
