Second 4.3 Quake in 2 Days Jolts Mammoth Lakes

Another magnitude 4.3 earthquake, the second in 33 hours, struck an area 11 miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes Sunday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The 7:45 a.m. temblor caused neither damage nor injuries and was located outside the volcanic Long Valley caldera at Mammoth Lake.
Although scientists have said the series of quakes that began June 8 reflect normal earthquake processes, they also reported a swarm of about 20 small jolts that occurred Saturday night inside the caldera.
These presumably volcanic quakes started at 9:14 p.m.
The Geological Survey said the ground reformation remains low in the Mammoth area and the risk of a volcanic eruption remains minimal. The last eruption in the vicinity was about 250 years ago.
