Genocide Suspects Making Confessions

The public execution of 22 people for their roles in the massacres of 1994 has led to a flood of confessions from genocide suspects hoping to avoid the death sentence, justice officials said. The executions in the capital, Kigali, and four provincial towns on Friday were the first public punishment for the genocide that claimed more than 800,000 lives. “Since . . . these executions, we have registered many applications for confession,” a senior official at the prosecutor’s office in Kigali said.
