GAME DAY / A Look at Today’s Key Matchups

NCAA DIVISION III

* CAL LUTHERAN (0-2) vs. SAN DIEGO (2-1)

At Mt. Clef Stadium, Thousand Oaks, 1 p.m.

Coming off a bye, Cal Lutheran will try for its first victory against a team that knocked off defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Redlands, 15-8, last week. Derek Brown, a senior transfer from Cal State Northridge, will start at quarterback for the Kingsmen in place of Zack Hernandez. Brown has completed 19 of 39 passes for 350 yards. Cal Lutheran’s running game is so weak that Hernandez (with 117 yards in 23 carries) is the leading rusher. Freshman Deshaun Sutton, the fastest player on the team, should see more action in the backfield. He has one carry this season. San Diego is a power-running team that employs frequent draws and counters. The attack features Mat Boggs, who has averaged 68.3 yards rushing per game, and Jared Keo, who has one touchdown rushing and one receiving. Quarterback Mike Stadler has completed 34 of 57 passes for 408 yards and five touchdowns.

JUNIOR COLLEGE

* MOORPARK (1-0) vs. BAKERSFIELD (2-0)

At Bakersfield, 7 p.m.

Moorpark, which did not play last week, travels north for a Western State Conference interdivision game against a state powerhouse. Bakersfield is ranked second in the state and first in Southern California after recording lopsided victories over Sequoias and Grossmont. Running backs Armis Stokes (223 yards) and J’Dron London (204) rank first and third among conference rushers. Quarterback Glenn Dudley, a transfer from Moorpark, has thrown for only 90 yards in two games but has completed 62% of his passes. Moorpark’s defense was strong in a 33-19 win over Antelope Valley, holding the Marauders to 67 yards rushing. The Raiders are ranked first in the conference in defense. Coach Jim Bittner remains undecided on several starting positions on offense, so several players figure to handle the ball tonight. Sophomore George Jones will start at quarterback but probably won’t go all the way. Running backs Aaron Davis and Joel Deliard will start.

* PIERCE (0-1) vs. WEST L.A. (1-1)

At West L.A., 1 p.m.

Pierce has lost 19 consecutive games. The Brahmas showed promise in a 37-25 loss to Southwestern. Quarterback Dan McMullen, who passed for more than 2,000 yards last season, remains the offensive spark, despite throwing for only 179 yards against Southwestern with two passes intercepted. Pierce Coach Bill Norton said morale remains high and the losing streak is not a topic of conversation. Norton is more concerned with stopping the Oilers’ explosive attack that features running back Marco Pleas, who averages 11 yards a carry, and wide receiver Raymont Skaggs, who has eight receptions. Quarterback Bryan Paul, a transfer from Valley, ranks fifth among conference rushers with 149 yards.

* HARBOR (1-1) vs. GLENDALE (0-2)

At Glendale High, 1 p.m.

Injuries to key players continue to plague Glendale. The Vaqueros’ top defensive player, all-conference linebacker Marlon Calloway, suffered a sprained ankle during the fourth quarter of a loss last week at Victor Valley and will be sidelined two weeks. Linebacker Jin Hur and defensive back Clifton Butts sat out last week because of ankle sprains. Hur likely will return tonight, Butts next week. Quarterback John Carnevali did not practice this week because of a bruised shoulder. Chris Cervantes, a freshman from Sylmar High, will replace him. Harbor stopped an 11-game losing streak with a 21-14 victory over Mt. San Jacinto last week. Quarterback Jack Hawley has passed for 412 yards and ranks second to Valley’s Tom Racius among conference passers with a completion percentage of 64.4. Ricardo Diaz has rushed for 136 yards in 21 carries.

* VENTURA (0-2) vs. SOUTHWEST (0-2)

At Southwest, Los Angeles, 1 p.m.

Inexperience and mistakes have contributed to Ventura’s slow start. Freshman quarterback Rolando Garcia has had eight passes intercepted, most in the WSC. A defense comprised mostly of freshmen has allowed a conference-high 79 points. The return of running back Brandon Scott, who sat out against Santa Monica because of a shoulder injury, should take some pressure off Garcia. Scott, a freshman from Orange, N.J., rushed for 217 yards two weeks ago against West L.A. Steve Crespo leads Ventura with 13 receptions and Donell Wickett has seven. Southwest has scored only 13 points, passed for 87 yards and made nine first downs. Nathaniel Harrison leads the Cougars with six receptions, including one for a touchdown.

* ANTELOPE VALLEY (1-1) vs. SOUTHWESTERN (2-0)

At Southwestern, Chula Vista, 7 p.m.

Lafayette Bailey, who rushed for more than 800 yards last season, will play for Antelope Valley after missing the Marauders’ first two games because of academic and disciplinary reasons. Bailey has been sharp in practice, Coach Brent Carder said. His return for the Foothill Conference opener is needed. Running backs Tyree Booker (knee) and Jan Brown (ankle) remain sidelined after being injured two weeks ago against Moorpark. Quarterback Brad Norris, who has platooned with Michael Gleich, suffered a separated shoulder last week against Kings River and is doubtful. Southwestern enters its first season in the conference after spending last season as an independent. The Apaches held off San Diego Mesa, 20-17, last week, thanks to a game-ending goal-line stand that included three solo tackles by linebacker Johnny Warden. Sophomore quarterback Andy Garcia has passed for 456 yards and five touchdowns.
