Digesting Acquisitions, Boeing Realigns Space Systems

SEAL BEACH — Boeing Co., still trying to digest the huge space operations it gobbled up with its recent acquisitions of McDonnell Douglas Inc. and Rockwell International Corp.’s aerospace businesses, said Wednesday it has reorganized its Orange County-based Space Systems unit.
The shuffling is mainly for administrative and marketing reasons and won’t affect employment or shift work from one area to another, said a spokesman at Boeing Space Systems headquarters in Seal Beach.
Under the realignment, Boeing has combined all the international space station work previously performed under separate contracts by units of Boeing, Rockwell and McDonnell Douglas into a single unit with administrative headquarters in Houston.
Additionally, Boeing Space Systems activities in Florida, Alabama and Houston have been consolidated into a new Space Operations & Utilization Support unit with headquarters in Seal Beach.
Boeing’s Space Systems has more than 27,000 employees, including 16,000 in California. About 10,000 work in Orange County.
