MARJAYOUN, Lebanon — Guerrillas attacked troops in the Israeli-occupied zone of southern Lebanon on Thursday, killing one Israeli soldier, wounding two others and provoking an exchange of fire that left eight other people injured, Lebanese security officials said.
Hezbollah militants fired rockets and mortars at Israeli army positions and its allied South Lebanon Army militia at daybreak, the officials said.
SLA artillery and Israeli tanks retaliated by firing at villages and suspected hide-outs of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah.
An Israeli army spokesman said in Jerusalem that one lieutenant was killed when his tank was hit directly. Two other soldiers were slightly injured.
The Hezbollah bombardment of Lebanese villages facing the zone wounded five civilians, including a woman who suffered a serious head injury, officials said.
An off-duty SLA militiaman was hurt by a guerrilla mortar shell that exploded near his house.
The officials said the Israeli and SLA shells wounded two civilians in the southern town of Nabatiyeh.
