Rockies’ Hopes Dim
SAN DIEGO — Wally Joyner’s two-run homer in the sixth inning led the Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday and damaged the Rockies’ already slim playoff hopes.
Larry Walker had two homers and four RBIs for the Rockies, who trail the Dodgers by six games in the NL West with 10 games left.
With San Diego trailing, 4-3, in the sixth, Ken Caminiti hit a leadoff single and Joyner followed with a home run off Colorado starter John Thomson (7-9).
Andy Ashby (9-11) earned the victory, allowing four runs on four hits and tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 35th save.
Walker’s three-run blast in the first and solo shot in the sixth gave him 47 homers, tying Andres Galarraga for the club record. Walker also has 123 RBIs.
In the battle for the NL batting title, Walker raised his average to .372 by going two for four. Tony Gwynn also went two for four and boosted his average to .367.
