THE LOCALS
UCLA (0-2) at No. 11 TEXAS (1-0)
* KICKOFF: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Channel 7.
* STORY LINE: UCLA is a team at a crossroads, with the ability to have won its first two games but the mistakes to have lost both. The Bruins need a victory, not just a near-miss.
* TEXAS UPDATE: Will quarterback James Brown play or won’t he? Only Coach John Mackovic seems to know, and he’s not telling. The Longhorns will have two teams depending on who is at quarterback: the one with Brown’s scrambling ability and experience, the other with the less mobile and inexperienced Richard Walton.
* UCLA UPDATE: The Bruins had a short Wednesday when they were kicked off the practice field by an angry Coach Bob Toledo, and they responded with a crisp Thursday workout. Freshman Marques Anderson starts his first game at cornerback, which could make him a prime Texas target.
* EDGE TO TEXAS: The Longhorns are big up front, both offensively and defensively, and running back Ricky Williams can make it tough on any defense, much less an undersized one like UCLA’s. All Texas has to do is move the ball inside the 35 as kicker Phil Dawson has made 10 field goals in a row--two last week of 50 yards-plus.
* THE LINE: Texas by 13.
