Torgeson Says Roast Was Well Done

Gary Torgeson, former Cal State Northridge softball coach who brought the Matadors to national prominence in the 1980s and early ‘90s, was honored--and roasted--by his former players at an alumni game on Saturday at Northridge.
Torgeson, who led the Matadors to four NCAA Division II championships and 11 consecutive conference titles, resigned his coaching position in 1994 after guiding the Matadors to a runner-up finish in the College World Series.
Torgeson is dean of physical education and athletics at Sacramento City College.
“It was neat,” Torgeson said. “They were telling old war stories. You sit there and laugh.”
Several players from Torgeson’s Division II title teams (1983-84-85-87) participated, including U.S. Olympic alternate Barbara Jordan, Michey McAnany of the Silver Bullets, Kathy Slaten, Stacy Lim, Nancy Lucero and Dana Vasquez.
