School for Expelled Students Proposed

Santa Ana Unified School District trustees today will consider opening their own school for expelled students, possibly inside the offices of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional.
Under the proposal, the community school would target 40 seventh- and eighth-graders who might otherwise be sent to a county-run school.
In addition to expelled students, the school could include those on probation and those who have shown poor attendance, according to a district report.
Hermandad, a Latino rights organization, is under investigation for alleged voter fraud, and the organization’s local director, Nativo V. Lopez, is president of the school board.
But Hermandad has offered office space to the district for $1 a year, and officials said there is no conflict of interest because Lopez would not profit from the arrangement.
The school board meets at 1601 E. Chestnut Ave. at 7 p.m.
