Ma, Northridge Volleyball Star, Scheduled for Surgery

Outside hitter Nancy Ma of the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team will have knee surgery Nov. 7 and will need several months of rehabilitation, Coach Lian Lu said.

Ma, a junior, tore ligaments and suffered cartilage damage to her right knee in a Big Sky Conference match against Weber State on Sept. 27 at Northridge. At the time of her injury, Ma led the Matadors with 194 kills.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Matthew Kearns has been hired as soccer coach at Santa Clara High, becoming the Saints’ third coach in three years.

Kearns, 23, is a walk-on coach and a 1993 Santa Clara graduate who helped the 1991-92 soccer team earn a Southern Section playoff berth. He played at Oxnard College in 1993 and 1994.

He attends Cal State Northridge.

SOFTBALL

Tryouts for the Rampage, a 16-and-under fast-pitch softball team based in Simi Valley, will be held at 10 a.m. on Nov. 1 and Nov. 8 at Moorpark College.

YOUTH SPORTS

Open registration for the William S. Hart Pony baseball-softball league will be held at the Hart complex’s administration trailer from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 1 and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 3.

A new softball T-ball league is being formed. Registration fees vary with each age division.
