Anteaters Stop Cal in Men’s Soccer

Robert Melendez’s first-half goal was the difference as UC Irvine defeated California in the opening round of the Titan Classic men’s soccer tournament at Cal State Fullerton.

Melendez scored from 12 yards out at 29th minute. UC Irvine is 4-6-4. California dropped to 8-5-1.

In the other Titan Classic game:

Cal State Fullerton 4, Iona 3--The Titans scored four second-half goals, including three consecutive to take a 3-1 lead and held off Iona (11-4). Charlie Lynch scored two goals for Fullerton (9-6).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

California 7, UC Irvine 1--Freshman Mike Foley scored UC Irvine’s only goal with 4 minutes 59 seconds left in the fourth quarter to keep the Anteaters from being shut out. UC Irvine, ranked sixth in the nation, is 6-9, 1-3. The Bears (14-4, 5-1), ranked fourth, had seven players who scored.
