SOUTHERN SECTION WATER POLO PLAYOFFS
Los Alamitos won its first section title with a 13-6 victory over Costa Mesa in the Division II championship match at Belmont Plaza.
Los Alamitos (25-4) took a 3-0 first-quarter lead on goals by sophomore Trevor Wawrzynski, James Ahn and Derek Bradley.
David Kong, who scored three goals, was especially effective in the hole where he made two back-handed shots. Kong’s goals were noteworthy because play in front of the goalie box was rougher than usual as officials kept whistles to a minimum.
Los Alamitos put the match away in the third quarter as Kong, Ahn, Bradley and Tyler Wawrzynski scored. The Griffins scored five goals in the fourth quarter.
Junior Hunter Taylor and senior Todd Hylton scored two goals each for Costa Mesa (25-6).
