Sign of the Times in Big 12: It’s a Missouri Stampede
BOULDER, Colo. — Corby Jones ran for one touchdown and passed for another as Missouri generated 517 yards to pound penalty-plagued Colorado, 41-31, in a Big 12 Conference game on Saturday.
Brock Olivo ran for two touchdown as Missouri, 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12, posted its third consecutive victory and ended a losing streak at 12 games against the Buffaloes (4-4, 2-3).
The Tigers negated a swirling wind by staying mainly on the ground, rushing for 353 yards and scoring on five straight possessions. Jones mixed in just enough passes to keep Colorado’s defense off balance, including a 38-yard touchdown pass play to Kent Layman that gave Missouri a 34-19 lead early in the final quarter.
Dwayne Cherrington scored his second touchdown moments later for Colorado, but Jeremy Aldrich missed the extra point. It was the third of four failed conversion-attempts by Colorado.
Missouri, which was coming off a 51-50 victory in double overtime over then No. 12 and unbeaten Oklahoma State, responded with a 10-play, 67-yard drive, capped by Olivo’s five-yard run with 4:24 left.
Four penalties were costly for Colorado, including an illegal-substitution penalty that nullified a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown by Marcus Washington.
A player was sent in from the sideline and linebacker Hannibal Navies couldn’t get off the field before the ball was snapped. Colorado protested the penalty, without success, arguing it had only 10 players on the field during the interception return and therefore Navies shouldn’t have been flagged. Missouri subsequently kicked a field goal.
Four minutes into the game, John Hessler passed to Marcus Stiggers for a 37-yard touchdown, but Stiggers jumped into the stands in the end zone and was whistled for a celebration penalty, forcing Aldrich to attempt what amounted to a 35-yard extra point, which was wide.
Jones then scored on a five-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive, kept alive when Colorado’s Rashidi Barnes was called for roughing the punter on fourth-and-11.
