Labor Dispute Disables Telecast
HOUSTON — Golf’s Tour Championship was knocked off TV on Saturday when ABC’s technicians staged a 24-hour walkout to protest disciplinary action against a union shop steward.
The National Assn. of Broadcast and Technical Employees said the worker, Mark Johnson, was suspended for two weeks because he drew a cartoon depicting Disney head Michael Eisner as Scrooge McDuck.
ABC said Johnson was suspended because he lied during a company investigation of the incident.
Disney is the parent company of ABC. NABET has been working without a contract since March 31 and negotiations are scheduled to resume Nov. 16, according to ABC.
The network broadcast final-round coverage of the 1995 Tour Championship won by Billy Mayfair, and gave updated of Saturday’s third round.
Final-round coverage will be shown today as planned, both the union and the company said.
