Gymnasium Will Open to the Public Next Month
Children will have Montebello’s new youth center almost entirely to themselves until late next month, when work on the city’s first public gym is expected to be finished, officials said Tuesday.
Although the gym’s grand opening Saturday featured a basketball game between two city teams, Assistant City Administrator Mario Guerra said the gym won’t be completed until late August. League play is scheduled to begin about the same time inside the $1.8-million Catherine “Cathy†Hensel Gymnasium and Youth Center, named for a former councilwoman.
In the meantime, the 14,000-square-foot building will be open only to participants in city-sponsored summer camp and day-care programs, he said.
