Mountains Group

In his June 30 commentary praising Marvin Braude’s 35 years as city councilman for the 13th District, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky made an error. Braude was not the founder of the Friends of the Santa Monica Mountains. He was the founder of the Santa Monica Mountains Regional Park Assn., an earlier, short-lived grouping.
The Friends of the Santa Monica Mountains became a leading advocate for a great seashore and mountains park (a unique federal, state and local park system) that extended from Elysian Park to the Point Mugu and the Channel Islands. The group was founded on the Mandeville Canyon tennis court of Eva Marie Saint and Jeffrey Hayden in 1963.
