Bill to Turn Hospital Into College Gets OK

A bill that would assure the use of Camarillo State Hospital as a college campus won unanimous approval Tuesday from an Assembly committee.
The Assembly Higher Education Committee approved Senate Bill 623, written by Sen. Jack O’Connell (D-San Luis Obispo). It provides for the transfer of the recently closed facility to the California State University system for use as its 23rd campus. The legislation also gives the CSU Board of Trustees power to use the property to make money through business ventures.
The bill now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, where it is set for hearings in August.
