Gunfire, Blazes Mark Post-Parade Riots

Roman Catholic rioters exchanged gunfire with security forces and torched vehicles and buildings throughout this province as anger over the British government’s handling of a Protestant march a day earlier sparked some of the most widespread violence in years and threatened to leave renewed peace efforts a shambles. More than 100 people were injured in the disturbances, which came after weeks of efforts by the new Labor government of Prime Minister Tony Blair to get the peace process back on track.
