Boston’s Bourque Earns 11th All-Star Game Start

Defenseman Ray Bourque of the Boston Bruins has extended his NHL record by earning an 11th starting berth on the all-star team.

Bourque received 272,540 votes and will be making his 16th all-star appearance, matching the total of Wayne Gretzky. Only Hall of Famer Gordie Howe with 23 has been in more All-Star games.

Joining Bourque in the starting lineup announced Tuesday are Philadelphia teammates Eric Lindros at center and John LeClair on one wing, Detroit’s Brendan Shanahan on the other wing, the New York Rangers’ Brian Leetch on defense and Colorado’s Patrick Roy in goal.

Top NHL players from North America will face a team of NHL stars from the rest of the world Jan. 18 at Vancouver.

The Edmonton Oilers sent three players to the Tampa Bay Lightning for top young defenseman Roman Hamrlik and the rights to unsigned draft pick Paul Comrie.

Defenseman Bryan Marchment and forwards Steve Kelly and Jason Bonsignore, both of whom were playing in the minor leagues, head to Tampa Bay in the exchange.

Hamrlik, 23, has three goals and 12 assists in 37 games this season. He was the No. 1 pick in the 1992 entry draft.

Pittsburgh Penguin forward Martin Straka will be sidelined four to six weeks after breaking a foot while blocking a shot Monday against the New York Islanders.

The New Jersey Devils played the opening 10 minutes of their game with the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night without a backup goaltender because Martin Brodeur went home with flu. Peter Sidorkiewicz came in from Albany, N.Y., and Mike Dunham made his seventh start for the Devils.

Calgary Flame left wing Mike Peluso, who suffers from a narrowing of the spinal column, has retired.

Peluso, 32, from Pengily, Minn., scored 38 goals and had 52 assists and 1,951 penalty minutes in 458 NHL games.
