Building Near Times Square Collapses

An abandoned building, built in 1927, collapsed on New York City’s 42nd Street, temporarily closing the famous thoroughfare a day before New Year’s celebrations in Times Square. City officials said no one was injured in the collapse of the six-story building near where crowds gather to see the traditional ball drop marking the new year. Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said it was hoped the area would be cleared in time for the festivities. A combination of a winter storm and construction next door caused the collapse, an official said.
