Seventy-two people were evacuated Tuesday after construction crews digging to install phone lines at a new fire station ruptured a gas line in the city’s resort area.

There were no injuries, and no one was hospitalized after the backhoe struck the gas line at 1701 S. Clementine St.

But 20 people from the nearby Residence Inn by Marriott-Anaheim, 14 people from an industrial complex and 26 workers from Satellite Cleaners were evacuated as a safety precaution, Fire Department Capt. Tabby Cato said.

A dozen construction workers inside the fire station also were evacuated. Cato said 17 firefighters responded to the incident at 10:17 a.m.

The street was reopened, and gas and electricity to nearby buildings were restored in about an hour, Cato said.
