1 Killed, 1 Hurt While Changing Tire on 605
A man was killed and a woman injured Tuesday when a Caltrans truck hit them as they changed a tire alongside the San Gabriel River Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man and woman, from Fullerton, were on the right shoulder of the freeway, south of the Katella Avenue exit, fixing the left, rear tire of their 1992 Honda Accord about 1 p.m. when the 1996 Dodge pickup hit them, CHP Officer Denise Medina said.
Jerry McLaughlin, 44, was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, where he died of his injuries at 5:35 p.m., a nursing supervisor said. Pia McLaughlin, 36, was listed in fair condition Tuesday night at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
The driver of the Caltrans truck, a 46-year-old Anaheim man, was not hurt. The crash was under investigation, and CHP officers were trying to determine how far on the shoulder the Honda was, Medina said.
