Canyon Shoots Down Reseda
Pat Terry delivered the winning kick in a shootout and the Canyon High boys’ soccer team upset Reseda on Monday in the semifinals of the Hart tournament.
Terry’s shot gave the Cowboys (8-3) a 5-4 edge in the shootout and a berth in today’s championship game against Palmdale. Canyon and Reseda tied in regulation, 2-2.
For Canyon, which failed to qualify for the Southern Section playoffs last season, the victory indicates they are much improved.
“I was the [junior varsity] coach the last three years and a lot of these guys came up with me,†said Canyon Coach John Robb, whose team includes only three starters from last season’s varsity.
Carlos Morales gave Reseda a 1-0 halftime lead but Canyon’s Raul Chavez tied the game at 1-1 off a pass from Jaime Alvarez 15 minutes into the second half.
With two minutes to play, Canyon’s Jesus Figueroa scored on a penalty shot for a 2-1 lead. But Reseda’s Jesse Servin also converted a penalty kick with 30 seconds remaining to force a shootout.
Eric Louzil, Jaime Alvarez, Doug Reynolds and Jesus Figueroa also scored for Canyon in the shootout.
Palmdale 3, Hart 0--Eric Villalobos gave the Falcons (7-6) a 1-0 halftime lead off a pass from Anthony Valentino, and Kim Britton scored twice in the second half with assists from Ricky Ramos in the other Hart tournament semifinal.
Birmingham 1, Grant 0--Roman Gorbatkin scored in the 15th minute for the Braves (9-0) in the Birmingham tournament.
GIRLS
Chatsworth 1, Agoura 1--Jackie Fodor of Chatsworth scored with five minutes remaining to force a shootout, which the Chancellors won, 8-7, to advance to the championship game of the Hart tournament.
Agoura 0, St. Bonaventure 0--Libby Larsen’s successful penalty shot was the lone highlight for the Seraphs (11-1-1) in a 2-1, shootout loss in the Hart tournament quarterfinals.
Alemany 1, El Camino Real 0--Erin Granados’ unassisted goal midway through the second half boosted the Indians (4-5-1) in a Hart tournament consolation game.
Alemany 2, South Pasadena 2--Alemany (4-5-2) surrendered the tying goal with six minutes to play, then lost a shootout, 7-6, in a Hart tournament consolation game.
Quartz Hill 1, Temple City 1--Quartz Hill lost in a shootout, 3-1, in a Hart tournament consolation game. Kellie Cox scored for the Rebels (5-4-1).
Newbury Park 7, Glendale 0--Desi Tyree had three goals for the Panthers (4-5-1) in a Hart tournament consolation game.
Chaminade 4, San Marcos 0--Amy Watts, Kim Taylor, Lindsey Horn and Jennifer Taylor scored for the Eagles (4-2) in a second-half explosion in the first round of the Foothill tournament in Santa Ana.
