San Jose-based Bay Apartment Communities Inc. said it paid $64.2 million for Viewpointe Apartments, a 663-unit complex in Woodland Hills, in a move to build business in Southern California. The company said it also plans to invest $8.4 million to protect the apartment buildings from earthquakes, mend stucco walls, replace roofs and refurbish a gymnasium and an office, as well as decks and footpaths. The complex will be added to 10 other properties the real estate investment trust already holds in Southern California, in addition to its 37 properties in Northern California. Bay Area Communities’ shares were unchanged at $38.88 on the NYSE. . . . Palo Alto-based Incyte Pharmaceuticals Inc. agreed to buy closely held Fremont-based Synteni Inc. for about $80 million in stock, broadening the array of genes it sells to companies working to develop new drugs.
