Guerrillas Attack Remote Army Base

Marxist guerrillas stormed a remote army base, killing as many as 22 soldiers and taking seven prisoner, authorities said. Army commander Gen. Mario Hugo Galan declined to confirm the death toll but described the situation in the southern Narino province as “very grave.†He said 34 men, including officers and soldiers, had been at the mountain base when it was overrun before dawn by about 400 guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
