Master’s Doubles Up on Point Loma, 88-69
The Master’s got double-digit scoring from four players, including 23 points from Jerome Joseph, to defeat Point Loma Nazarene, 88-69, in a men’s basketball nonconference game Saturday night at Master’s.
Joey Penberthy scored 13 points for Master’s (10-4), Jeremiah Cathey had 12 and Brian Wilson finished with 10.
The Mustangs outrebounded Point Loma, 63-36. Joclin Julmist had a game-high 14 rebounds for Master’s.
Point Loma’s Marty Ellis led all scorers with 29 points.
Glendale 91, Bakersfield 82--Glendale rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit in the championship game of the Glendale tournament.
Tony Hoggatts scored 29 points and Juan Corleto added 23 for Glendale (7-5), which took the lead for good with just under 4:00 remaining.
Deionta Hagwood scored 20 points for Bakersfield (12-1).
UC San Diego 77, Cal Lutheran 69--Mike Dulaney and Mike Salser each scored 22 points for host Cal Lutheran (3-3) in a nonconference game. Salser had 14 rebounds and Dulaney 11.
Center Tyler Field had 30 points and 20 rebounds for the Tritons (5-4).
San Diego made 18 of 30 free throws and the Kingsmen made eight of 11.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Pepperdine 74, Alaska Anchorage 52--Junior guard Dana Sulenski scored 19 points and junior center Jenny Frank had 17 points and eight rebounds for Pepperdine (8-4) in an Alaska Anchorage tournament consolation game.
Alemany High product Samantha Rigley scored 13 points and reserve forward Nikki Fields had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Pepperdine.
Southern California College 88, The Master’s 63--Elizabeth Hansell had 20 points and 11 rebounds for host Master’s (5-6) in a nonconference game.
Reserve guard Sara Scheffer contributed 10 points for Master’s, which was outrebounded, 50-32.
The teams combined for 54 fouls and 59 turnovers. The Vanguards (8-4) scored 25 points off 30 turnovers by the Mustangs.
Ventura 82, Irvine Valley 58--Amirah Leonard had 23 points, six assists and six steals for Ventura (14-1), the two-time defending state champion, in a nonconference game at Ventura.
Valley 74, Oxnard 18--Maricela Rodriguez scored a season-high 20 points and had 10 rebounds and 10 steals for host Valley (6-6) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game.
Nyoki McKeith had 12 points and six steals for Valley, which had 32 steals.
Canyons 94, Saddleback 58--Gohar Tumanian scored 22 points for host Canyons (7-4) in a nonconference game.
Zevette Mitchell scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Maxine Unverferth scored 15 points for Canyons.
