La Canada Chops Down Bishop Montgomery, 66-58
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE — With nine players listed at 6 feet 4 or taller, Bishop Montgomery High went into its boys’ basketball game Saturday night against La Canada in the La Canada/St. Francis tournament with a distinct height advantage.
But La Canada used the inside play of center Matt Moore and the outside shooting of Ian Sullivan to cut the Knights down to size, 66-58, in the regional semifinals.
Moore, a 6-7 senior, scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Sullivan scored 18 points, including four three-point baskets, to lead La Canada (8-2).
The Spartans even won the rebounding battle, 23-18.
“Matt did a great job on the boards, but we told the other guys they had to step up,†said Tom Hofman, La Canada’s coach.
The victory for La Canada sets up a game against Muir in the regional final Monday at 8 p.m.
“It’s a great building block for us, but we have another tough test Monday,†Hofman said.
Bishop Montgomery (5-3), one of the favorites to win the Del Rey League title, was led by Brian Pruitt with 16 points, Tony Booker with 12 and Marvin Perez with 10.
In other tournament games:
Muir 66, Pasadena 49--John Parker had 17 points and 16 rebounds and Jason Bonwell scored 16 points for Muir (8-1) in a championship semifinal.
Pasadena (5-4), which trailed by as many as 23 points, was led by Jon Wilburn and Brooke Ewing, each with 10 points.
Glendale 75, Burnett (Canada) 72--Glendale (6-4) built a 20-point lead in the third quarter but was forced into overtime in a regional consolation semifinal.
Glendale went ahead for good, 71-69, on a three-point basket by Krikor Karamanoukian with 1:09 remaining.
Saro Jankozian led the Dynamiters with 17 points and nine rebounds. Karamanoukian finished with 16 points and eight assists, Tomik Iranosian scored 15 points and Ronald Baghomian had 12 points and five rebounds.
Burnett, from Richmond, British Columbia, was led by forward Jatinder Johal with 28 points and 15 rebounds.
Moorpark 70, Schurr 47--Forward Kevin Lawrence scored 32 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for the Moorpark (6-3) in a regional consolation semifinal.
Lawrence, who made 15 of 25 shots, scored 13 points in the fourth quarter when Moorpark outscored Schurr, 27-14.
The Musketeers led by as many as 25 points.
Moorpark’s Keith Donahue had 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Dave Osborne led Schurr (3-6) with 12 points.
