Police Detective Admits to Bigamy, Is Fined $750
A Santa Ana police officer who was once married to three women at the same time pleaded guilty to bigamy and was fined $750, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Robert Brekenfeld, 42, was in the midst of getting a divorce from his first wife, Kendall Brekenfeld, when he was charged with the misdemeanor, Deputy Dist. Atty. Burl Estes said. He has since annulled two other marriages and remarried his third wife, Shari Brekenfeld, according to county court records.
“His legal affairs are now in order,†said Estes, who believes the case was about poorly handled personal matters, not an attempt to deceive the three women.
Brekenfeld, a detective with the Santa Ana department, was going through a divorce with his first wife and was separated from his second wife when he married his third wife in 1996, Estes said.
The bigamy charge stemmed from Brekenfeld marrying his second wife while still wed to his first.
His attorney, Andrew Gale, and Santa Ana police officials did not return phone calls seeking comment.
