James H. Andros; OSS Veteran of World War II
James H. Andros of Ventura, a decorated World War II veteran who served in the Office of Strategic Services, died Tuesday at a local hospital. He was 75.
Andros was born May 14, 1922, in Chicago and lived in Ventura County for 11 years.
He served in the OSS in North Africa, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, France and Germany. Andros participated in numerous operations including Operation Staircase in Greece, in which the Corinth Canal bridge and railroad were destroyed.
For his service, he was awarded four Overseas Service bars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon with one bronze and one silver bar, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Andros was recently recognized by the government of Greece for his contribution to the liberation of the country during World War II.
After the war, Andros owned and operated several service stations in Chicago. His first wife, Eleanor, died in 1981 and in 1984 he married Katina Askouni of Ventura.
Andros retired in 1986, and they moved to Ventura.
In addition to his wife, Andros is survived by his daughter, Beck Andros of Seattle, and sister, Mary E. Arends of Oak Brook, Ill.
He was preceded in death by brothers Alex Andrianakis, Angelo Andros and George Andros.
Trisagion will be tonight at 7:30 at the Reardon Funeral Chapel, Ventura. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Camarillo, with the Rev. Cyril Loeb, archimandrite, officiating.
Burial will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 400 Skyway Drive, Camarillo 93010.
