Popocatepetl Erupts as More Crater Deformations Are Observed

Popocatepetl volcano outside Mexico City erupted Tuesday, the first eruption since August. A large cloud of ash rose half a mile above the 17,887-foot peak, and flaming rocks were seen ejected from eight miles away.
Mexican authorities reported that towns 60 miles southwest of the volcano suffered an ash fall, and that scientists had observed new deformation in the mountain’s crater, indicating the buildup of magma that might lead to further eruptions.
